Hoosiers Improve to 4-0 Heading Into Bahamas

Welcome to another edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a joint production between The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall, and presented by our friends at Homefield Apparel, where we highlight the five most essential IU basketball stories of the past week, plus take a look at how the other IU sports programs are doing.

IU basketball continued its strong start to the season with a victory over UNC Greensboro despite a far-from-perfect performance. Also, women’s basketball had a couple of big wins this week.

Besides this, readers will find info about some early season numbers and Indiana’s first football loss. We will as usual conclude with a look at other Hoosier sports led by soccer’s selection to the NCAA Tournament.

Banner #1: Hoosiers Knock Off South Carolina With Best Game Of Season So Far

While it was not always pretty, IU improved to 4-0 with a victory over UNC Greensboro in Bloomington. The Hoosiers raced out to a 16-point lead twice in the first half but the Spartans answered each time.

However, Myles Rice led Indiana in another breakout game and Bryson Tucker made some big shots as IU held on. The final was 69-58 as the Hoosiers put away UNCG late in their final tune up before the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Afterward, IU coach Mike Woodson spoke, Inside the Hall had a Photo Gallery, Ryan Corazza wrote a Minute After and Film Session, Alex Bozich put together Five Takeaways, and Kevin Vera penned a column about the squad’s imperfect play,

Banner #2: Women Beat Stanford and Columbia

After a couple of bad losses against Harvard at home and struggling Butler on the road, the Indiana women responded with two massive victories this week. First, they took out a then-ranked Stanford team last Sunday at Assembly Hall in a dominant fashion led by strong backcourt play.

Finally, yesterday they edged mid-major power Columbia on a neutral floor in the Bahamas behind a career game form post player Lily Meister. They have a very tall task today at 1:30 pm vs. elite Baylor.

Banner #3: Early Season Basketball Update

While the Hoosiers are 4-0, other teams have also gotten their season underway in the Big Ten. Inside the Hall looked at where each squad in the conference stands after several games according to the computer rankings.

The site also looked at an IU-specific metric. This involved a notable number for each rotation player so far.

Banner #4: Football Falls To Ohio State For First Loss Of The Season

A magical 10-0 run to start 2024 came to an end for IU football as they were manhandled by an elite Ohio State squad 38-15. While the defense held strong, poor play from the offensive line and mistakes on special teams doomed the Hoosiers.

Indiana came into this week at no. 5 in the College Football Playoff. How far they fall in the 12-team tournament remains to be seen. Losses by Alabama, BYU, Colorado, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M helped. However, where or if they are still in the top 12 will be known when the new rankings come out on Tuesday.

Podcast on the Brink was recorded this week. It was a milestone 500th episode featuring Assembly Call’s own Jerod Morris.

Banner #6: Hoosier Roundup-Soccer Selected To NCAA Tournament As Seeded Team

• Men’s Soccer was selected to the NCAA Tournament as a seeded team at no. 14. They take on Akron today at 1 pm at home in the round of 32 as they begin their chase for a ninth national title.

• Volleyball got back on track by beating UCLA.

• Wrestling beat Columbia.

• Swimming and Diving won the Ohio State Invitational.

• Men’s tennis competed at the NCAA Doubles Championship.

• Softball announced its 2025 schedule.
