[IUFR] Breaking Down Indiana's Offensive Sets from the First Exhibition Game
Coach Adragna takes a look at Indiana's offensive actions from their first exhibition of the season.
It wasn’t always pretty, but a real basketball game was played at Assembly Hall last Sunday.
And that got me excited.
Much of the first half was what you would expect from an exhibition game played by an IU team with a lot of new pieces. I’m not trying to make excuses for Indiana’s poor play in the first half — it certainly should have been better — but it wasn’t surprising.
For example, here you can see Xavier Johnson demonstrably waving Mackenzie Mgbako through.
It appears Mgbako should have made his baseline cut sooner based on the set IU was running and X’s reaction. Those are the type of issues that can easily be cleaned up with more time in the system and more time playing together.
Jitters looked like the other culprit to me. Indiana was executing well on both ends of the floor, but they missed aLOT of shots at the rim that will (hopefully) go down with more regularity moving forward.
In the Film Room below, I take a look at what Indiana was doing offensively and break down the different looks they were trying to get. (It should be a nice primer for tonight’s second exhibition game against Marian.)
All in all, I liked what I saw from the scheme side of things. My biggest hesitation with lineups including Mgbako, Reneau, and Ware was spacing concerns, but I didn’t see that. I thought the Hoosiers spaced the floor well.
