Taylor And Colopy Each Hit A Trio Of Home Runs This Weekend
Devin Taylor is expected to be the Hoosiers’ best hitter with both a high average and double-digit long balls. The sophomore from Cincinnati is living up to that billing as he is currently batting .552 early on and launched his first three long balls in 2024 this weekend. Two of them were moonshots beyond the right field wall and into a lake a little further back.
While Taylor’s contact and power were completely expected, Morgan Colopy’s was not. The senior from the Dayton area has almost always been a part-timer known for his defense. However, he is currently being used every day due to an injury (more below). Colopy has taken full advantage of this and currently leads the Hoosiers with four of their 15 long balls to begin this season. He hit just one out of the park in 2023 (although it was the biggest one of the year), so this power surge in an already potent lineup is a huge bonus and makes a case for more regular playing time.
Foley Gave IU Length On Saturday To Highlight Huge Weekend On The Mound
The Hoosiers are still trying to figure out which of their top arms can provide length as weekend starters. So far, Conor Foley has been given the ball on Saturday in each of his two appearances. While Foley was good with four shutout innings his first time out, he was even better this time. He gave up no runs in six shutout innings against the Bears yesterday.
With Indiana having plenty of pitchers out of the bullpen with terrific stuff, they need more guys who can eat innings. Foley, it appears can be one of those, and if Friday man Brayden Risedorph can be stretched out just a little bit more, the team will have the two proven openers they need.
Nick Mitchell Makes Debut On Sunday
Western Illinois transfer Nick Mitchell is thought of as one of the best at his position in the outfield. He is expected to be an everyday starter and replace Phillip Glasser in the leadoff role. However, in practice leading up to the season, he was hit by a pitch and had not seen time yet due to the resulting injury.
However, on Sunday he finally found his way into the lineup but as the DH in the sixth spot as he gets up to speed. However, he showed how valuable he can be by going 1-3 with a couple of walks and three runs scored.
The Hoosiers have a game with struggling Purdue Fort Wayne On Tuesday at home, weather permitting (4:05 pm on BIG+). Next weekend they have an opportunity for more signature victories when they head to Frisco, Texas to take on Alabama, Dallas Baptist, and Arizona who all have postseason aspirations.
Great start to season!!
Should be a fun season
