IU Celebrates Its Big Ten Championship At Armstrong Stadium After Victory
Soccer’s 2026 Season Starts With a Bang, and Ends With One Too As Team Clinches Big Ten Championship
BLOOMINGTON — The IU men’s soccer team got off to a fast start this fall. The early positive results matched last season’s lightning beginning, but this time, the Hoosiers avoided a late-season fade.
The last two years have completely flipped the script on the slow Septembers that plagued the program earlier in the 2020s. This time around, it was a stellar campaign from beginning to end. Indiana lost just once all regular season, ultimately clinching the program’s 20th regular-season Big Ten Championship outright in a thrilling 3-2 victory over top-10 Michigan State on Wednesday night.
IU head coach Todd Yeagley said this title means a little something extra given the sheer strength of the expanded Big Ten.
“Our conference this year is the hardest it’s ever been,” Yeagley said. “I think to win this regular season (title) is the toughest task we’ve had to do since I’ve been a head coach with the quality of the (conference) teams top to bottom.”
Not since the College Cup runs of 2017 and 2018 have the Hoosiers looked this dominant from the onset, refusing to take their foot off the gas. IU finished the 2026 regular season with a 14-1-3 overall record and a 7-1-2 mark in league play.
Much of this consistency stems from improved play along the back line and a reliable anchor in the net: junior transfer goalkeeper Michal Mroz. Mroz, has stabilized the position for the first time since 2023, allowing just 11 goals so far this fall.
Mroz’s presence gives IU fans plenty of confidence should the team find itself in a postseason penalty shootout. This is a high-pressure situation where the program thrived under past greats like Roman Celentano and Trey Muse but struggled with in recent seasons.
IU Sports Thriving Across the Entire Athletic Department
Indiana University athletics is enjoying a dream autumn. With the exception of women’s soccer, nearly every varsity squad on campus has spent the fall ranked in the Top 25 or putting together a remarkably strong season.
The volleyball program has spent the year ranked in the top 25 and appears well on its way to a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Outside of their historic 2025 Sweet 16 run, this is easily the program’s most successful stretch since 2010. Field hockey has also put together its finest season in years, maintaining a national ranking even after tapering off slightly from a blistering hot start.
Additionally, the cross country and golf programs have turned in a few strong weekend performances, while swimming and diving remains firmly entrenched in the national top five. These successes, of course, come alongside a top-five ranking for the football team and immense basketball optimism as both the men’s and women’s squads tipped off their seasons this week.
Will the Hoosiers Play at Bill Armstrong Stadium Until the College Cup?
Thanks to their regular season excellence, the Hoosiers have earned the luxury of playing their entire conference postseason—and potentially most of the national tournament—right at home. By locking up the No. 1 seed in the conference, Indiana earns a quarterfinal bye.
They will officially host the Big Ten Tournament Semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. ET (televised live on the Big Ten Network) against the winner of Sunday’s quarterfinal matchup between Michigan State and Maryland. Because Indiana holds the highest seed, they are guaranteed to host the Big Ten Tournament Championship on Sunday, Nov. 15 if they advance.
As for the NCAA Tournament, IU’s robust résumé likely has them positioned for a top-four national seed, which would secure hosting duties all the way through the Elite Eight. If they keep winning, the Hoosiers could play up to five postseason matches on Jerry Yeagley Field before a potential trip to Cary, North Carolina for the College Cup in December.
Forward Easton Bogard, who netted a first-half brace against the Spartans to help secure the crown, is eager to make the most of the Bloomington advantage.
“That’s a great feeling honestly,” Bogard said. “We’ve been great at home and we feel so confident at home. Especially with this unbelievable fan base behind our back.”
