As you may have noticed, we’ve been doing lots of building and migrating in public over the last few weeks.
We have combined our private Mighty Networks community and ConvertKit email list into one comprehensive Substack publication that will now serve as the online home for all Assembly Call, IU Film Room, and Doing The Work content.
So if you were a member of our Mighty Network or subscribed to our email list, you’ve been automatically migrated here to Substack with the same level of access you had previously.
And to be clear: if you only had an email subscription before and you read our content solely in your inbox, you will still be able to consume our content the exact same way now. (You might not have even noticed much of a difference other than aesthetics if I hadn’t said anything!)
Okay, so then why move?
If you’re already an avid Substack user, you probably understand at least some of the reasons why we made this decision.
The platform has relentlessly improved its user experience for creators and consumers alike over the last 12-18 months.
For example, their app is fantastic. If you plan to subscribe to other publications or want to use the discussion and community features like Notes and Chat, I highly recommend downloading and using it.
But if you’re new to Substack, or have never seen Substack used as a community hub like we’re going to use it, you may wonder why we chose to make this move.
Allow me to explain.
Why we moved to Substack … and how we’re here to help you do the same
Not only will it save us a bunch of money in terms of expenses -- because Substack is free to use, whereas ConvertKit and Mighty Networks are quite expensive -- but we believe it will also deliver a better content and community experience for everyone in our audience, from casual readers to daily community members.
This Substack will now essentially serve as our primary website, housing our free content, premium content, and community conversations all in one place -- while making it even easier for us to grow and attract more IU fans who fit our community ethos. (We also launched a private Discord server for our premium subscribers.)
But we don’t want to take for granted the apprehension and inconvenience that change can bring with it. Many of you have long-standing habits for how you consume our content and interact with other community members, and some of those habits may have to change now.
Our goal is to leave no one behind who wants to move forward with us!
To that end, we’ve created a few tutorial videos that we hope will help you get acclimated, answer questions you may have, and perhaps even your eyes to new ways the tools and setup of Substack can enhance your experience.
Below are the first two of those tutorials, with more to come in the future based on feedback we get from users.
But first, if you were forwarded this email or stumbled upon this post without being subscribed, make sure you at least set up your free subscription now:
Tutorial: Brief Tour of Our New Assembly Call Substack
This first tutorial is a basic overview of the new site so you know where to find everything, and how the split between free and paid content works.
Tutorial: Substack Basics for Logging In, Editing Your Profile, and Posting Notes and Chats
This next tutorial will show you the basics, even including how to log in. (As I said, we’re taking nothing for granted!)
This video also help you set up your profile, both in terms of how your name and avatar are displayed and also how to fine tune your notifications so you get the experience you want.
Hopefully those videos are helpful.
But if you have any additional questions, especially if you feel like you should have premium access but your account isn’t giving it to you, please leave a comment below or email me: jerod@assemblycall.com.
As I said to the folks in our Mighty Network, we’ll do whatever we can to help you migrate here successfully. Just let us know what help you need.
We’re so excited about what this move to Substack can mean for the future of our work covering IU hoops, and we want every single one of you to come along with us … and bring friends. :-)
The comment section below is open to all, so please post any questions or thoughts you have on the move to Substack.
What to expect moving forward
As we move forward, you can expect our regular rhythm of in-season emails to continue:
6-Banner Sunday on Sunday morning to all subscribers.
Postgame 3-2-1 the morning after games to all subscribers.
Tony’s IU Film Room on Fridays and Coach Tonsoni’s Coach’s Corner posts sometime during the week — both of these are for premium subscribers only.
Plus we’ll be posting Watch Pages for all episodes of The Assembly Call and Doing The Work, as well as community conversation posts like the postgame polls for Game Balls and Hoosier Hustle in the hours after games end.
And I’m sure we’ll find many other new ways to take advantage of the platform.
If it ever feels like too much, check out the Newsletter page and click on the Account Settings link to toggle any of the emails on or off.
Then once the season ends, things will slow down.
Again, if you have any questions, please email me or reply below.
If last night was any indication, this is going to be an exciting, mysterious, and nerve-wracking season with the potential to be very, very successful for both our men’s and women’s basketball teams.
We’re excited to share it with you every step of the way … now in our new online home.
Hang in there with the migration. This stuff is inevitable. I greatly appreciate everything you do Jerod! It’s obvious you always try to do things with quality and integrity. I hope you realize how much that means to the community.
Thanks. The loom link works
