Thanks for the explanation. I think I hate this philosophy even more now. So many teams in the college game are trying to generate 3 pointers I'm just not sure why you would set up a defense that makes it more challenging to close out on shooters.

Seems like if players aren't comfortable they aren't going to be making the right plays guarding the 1 in the defense. Hopefully it will get better with time. IU's length could also be effective in a zone occasionally, but that isn't Pro style.

Great explanation from Tom Soni. Going back and watching some replays from the first few games it's clear that our "nail" guy, especially when it is Mgbako, is leaving the nail too often and early in an attempt to put pressure on the ball handler, creating a very long closeout to the perimeter shooter. Doesn't really make sense to me why Woodson wants to use this defense when Ware is underneath. Time will tell.
